Rongai is the only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It sees few other climbers and the north side gets less rain, so it is a good choice for the rainy months and for anyone who wants a quieter, more remote climb.
The seven-day climb splits the way to Kikelewa into two shorter days. That extra night is the one we recommend: easier walking and a better chance of reaching the top.
Route: Moshi – Nale Moru Gate – Simba Camp – Second Cave – Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo – Marangu Gate
We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or pick you up anywhere in Moshi or Arusha) and drive you to Maridadi Hotel. In the evening your lead guide comes to brief you on the route, check your gear and answer every question.
A drive round to the village of Nale Moru on the north side (1,990 m). You walk through farmland and pine forest to the edge of the moorland. Colobus monkeys — and sometimes elephants or buffalo — live here.
A gentle climb with views of Kibo, onto moorland paths towards Mawenzi.
Up through the moorland to a sheltered valley near the Kikelewa caves.
Up grassy slopes, with views over the Kenyan plains, to a camp beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi where the plants come to an end. The afternoon is for rest or a short acclimatisation walk.
Across the desert-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to Kibo Hut. The rest of the day is for preparing and resting before the midnight start.
A wake-up at about 23:20, then the night climb past Hans Meyer Cave and up the steep scree to Gillman's Point, and on along the snowy rim to Uhuru Peak. After a rest at Kibo Hut you walk down to Horombo Hut.
Down past Mandara Hut and through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. You sign the register, receive your certificate — green for Gillman's Point, gold for Uhuru Peak — and drive back to Moshi.
Breakfast, then a private transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. Not ready to leave? Add a safari or a few days on Zanzibar — we arrange it all.
