Rongai is the only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It sees few other climbers and the north side gets less rain, so it is a good choice for the rainy months and for anyone who wants a quieter, more remote climb.

The seven-day climb splits the way to Kikelewa into two shorter days. That extra night is the one we recommend: easier walking and a better chance of reaching the top.

  • Peaceful northern approach
  • Shorter days and better acclimatisation
  • Mawenzi Tarn beneath the jagged spires
  • Good in the rainy season
  • Varied zones from rainforest to arctic summit

Route: Moshi – Nale Moru Gate – Simba Camp – Second Cave – Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo – Marangu Gate
