In recent years Machame has overtaken Marangu as the most popular route on Kilimanjaro, and many guides call it the most enjoyable. It is longer and more demanding than Marangu, but the “climb high, sleep low” profile gives you better acclimatisation — and a higher success rate.

In six days you pass through every zone of the mountain: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the glaciers of the summit. You scramble up the Barranco Wall, climb to Uhuru Peak from Barafu Camp at sunrise, and come down by a different path through the Mweka forest.

  • Five climate zones, from rainforest to glacier
  • "Climb high, sleep low" at the Lava Tower
  • The Great Barranco Wall scramble
  • Sunrise summit from Barafu Camp
  • Descend by a different route through Mweka

Itinéraire: Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp – Shira 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco – Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Gate

Questions sur ce voyage

Is the Barranco Wall dangerous?

It looks dramatic from below, but it is a scramble on a good path where you sometimes use your hands. No ropes are needed and your guides help you at every step. Most climbers say it is the highlight of the route.

Can I take the Western Breach instead?

The Western Breach and Arrow Glacier route to the summit is available on request for experienced climbers. Ask us and we will tell you honestly if it suits you.
