Rongai is the only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It sees few other climbers and the north side gets less rain, so it is a good choice for the rainy months and for anyone who wants a quieter, more remote climb.

It is moderately difficult and suits climbers with less hiking experience. You cross wilderness before joining the Marangu route at Kibo Hut, then come down the Marangu side. Six days is the minimum; seven is better.

  • The only route from the north
  • Drier — good for the rainy months
  • Quiet trails and wild landscapes
  • Suits climbers with less experience
  • Descend through the Marangu rainforest

Itinéraire: Moshi – Nale Moru Gate – Simba Camp – Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo – Marangu Gate
