Gombe National Park is a narrow strip of ancient forest nestled in the mountains, with steep valleys that stretch along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
The park’s main attraction is, of course, the chimpanzees, which are carefully protected within its boundaries. Visitors to the area can enjoy activities like chimpanzee trekking, hiking, guided walks through the forest, or along the lakeshore, as well as visits to the park’s beautiful waterfall.
The landscape of Gombe is dominated by sharp ridges and valleys, and if you’re here to see the chimpanzees, you’ll be exploring these areas on foot. The park is known for its breathtaking scenery, with 16 major valleys that each contain swift streams flowing year-round.
In Gombe, you’ll have the chance to meet the stars of the world-renowned chimpanzee community. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking research here in 1960, and the chimpanzees of Gombe are among the most studied primates in the world.
Sharing more than 98% of our DNA, the chimpanzees offer a glimpse into the behaviors of our closest animal relatives. Alongside them, you’ll likely encounter other primates such as the vibrant red-tail and blue monkeys, as well as various forest species.
