Best Time of Year to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but some months offer better weather, clearer skies, and safer trail conditions. At Migration Venture Africa, we advise climbers to plan their treks during the dry seasons when the experience is more comfortable and visibility is at its best. While the mountain is never officially closed, the dry months remain the most reliable for a successful and enjoyable summit attempt.

Why the Dry Season is Recommended

The most suitable climbing months are from December to mid-March and from late June to October. Within these periods, January, February, July, August, September, and October are especially favorable due to stable weather, sunshine, and minimal rainfall. These conditions make the hikes more enjoyable and provide beautiful, clear views of the mountain’s landscapes and glaciers. However, even during the dry months, Kilimanjaro’s weather can change with little warning, so climbers must be prepared with proper gear.

Why We Avoid April, May, and November

Although Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time, April, early May, and November are not recommended. These months fall within the long and short rainy seasons, where trails become muddy, visibility decreases, and climbing becomes significantly more demanding. For safety and comfort, Migration Venture Africa does not schedule climbs during this period unless a climber insists and is experienced enough to handle challenging conditions.

Climbing in January and February

January and February offer some of the best conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro. The weather is mostly dry, visibility is clear, and trekkers have a good chance of seeing snow near the summit, which creates impressive scenery. Although this period is part of the high season, it is often less crowded than the peak months of July and August. This makes January and February an excellent option for climbers who want stable weather without excessive traffic on the trails.

Climbing in Late March, April, and May

Late March begins the transition into the long rainy season. Early March can still provide favorable conditions, but as the month continues, the mountain usually receives more rain. April and early May are the wettest months of the year and therefore are not ideal for climbing. Trails become slippery, the forest becomes muddy, and the summit is often covered in clouds, limiting visibility. If climbers must travel during late March or late May, Migration Venture Africa recommends northern routes such as Rongai or the Northern Circuit, where conditions are more manageable and rainfall is lighter.

Climbing in June, July, August, and September

June marks the start of the main climbing season, when rainfall decreases and the mountain dries up. July and August are the busiest months due to summer holidays in many countries, but these months also provide excellent weather and clear skies. September offers similarly stable conditions, often with fewer crowds. Even during peak periods, Migration Venture Africa ensures comfort by providing private toilet tents and well-organized camps, helping climbers avoid congestion and maintain hygiene.

Climbing in October and November

October signals the approach of the short rainy season. Although rain is possible, it is usually lighter and less continuous than in April and May. Climbs during this period are quieter, and some trekkers prefer the peaceful trails. November generally brings more regular rainfall, especially in the afternoons, but the northern side of Kilimanjaro remains more sheltered. For this reason, Migration Venture Africa recommends the Rongai or Northern Circuit routes for anyone climbing during October or November.

Weather and Visibility Considerations

Kilimanjaro’s weather varies greatly with altitude. The lower slopes are warm, while the higher regions are cold and exposed to strong winds. The summit remains below freezing year-round. Even during warm months, nighttime temperatures can drop sharply. Although the dry season offers the best visibility, mist and cloud cover are common during the rainy months, which reduces scenery and photography opportunities.

Temperature and Climate Zones

Kilimanjaro features five different climate zones, starting with tropical forest and rising into arctic conditions at the summit. The climate changes are dramatic, and climbers must be prepared for hot, humid paths at the base and freezing wind near the top. Because of this, proper warm clothing and waterproof protection are required at all times.

Crowd Levels on Kilimanjaro

January to March and June to October attract the largest number of climbers. Popular routes such as Machame and Marangu can become busy, but this can be avoided by choosing quieter routes. Migration Venture Africa often recommends the Northern Circuit, Rongai, or Lemosho Route for climbers who want peaceful trails without sacrificing scenery or safety.

Full Moon and New Moon Climbs

Some climbers prefer to plan their summit attempt around a full moon. On a clear night, the moonlight reflects off the ice and snow, making the summit approach bright and beautiful. Others choose new moon periods when the sky is dark and filled with stars. Migration Venture Africa can arrange climbs to match either preference, depending on the traveler’s schedule and interests.

Choosing the Best Time for Your Travel Plan

Many climbers combine the Kilimanjaro trek with a safari or relaxing time in Zanzibar. For this reason, travel availability and holiday plans also influence the best time to climb. We assist climbers in choosing dates that fit both weather and personal itineraries. While April, May, and November are not recommended, experienced hikers may still climb in late March or late May with proper equipment and guidance.
