KPAP: Tanzania Supporting Responsible Mountain Trekking
Understanding KPAP: Supporting Fair Treatment for Kilimanjaro Porters
At Migration Venture Africa, we believe that every successful Kilimanjaro climb is made possible by a dedicated team of porters who work tirelessly behind the scenes. These men and women carry equipment, set up camps, fetch water, and make sure every climber feels safe and supported on the mountain. Their strength and commitment are the backbone of every trek, and that’s why we proudly support the mission and values of KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project).
What Is KPAP?
The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) is a non-profit organization established to improve the working conditions of porters on Mount Kilimanjaro. KPAP operates under the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC) and works closely with reputable trekking companies to ensure ethical climbing practices.
Their goal is to create a fair, safe, and supportive working environment for porters through education, monitoring, and advocacy.
Why KPAP Matters
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro requires carrying large amounts of equipment. Porters often face challenges such as underpayment, inadequate equipment, excessive loads, or unsafe working conditions. KPAP steps in to ensure:
-
Porters receive fair wages
-
Their loads do not exceed the recommended weight
-
They are provided with three meals a day on the mountain
-
They have proper sleeping conditions
-
They are treated with respect and dignity
-
Climbing companies operate ethically and transparently
By holding tour operators accountable, KPAP plays a crucial role in improving porter welfare and promoting responsible trekking.
How KPAP Works
KPAP monitors climbs through field investigations, porter interviews, and cooperation with partner companies. They also run training programs to help porters develop skills such as:
-
Environmental conservation
-
Customer service
-
English language
-
First aid and safety
-
Financial management
These programs empower porters not only for their work on Kilimanjaro but also for future economic and career opportunities.
