Gombe Stream National Park

Steep forested valleys on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, reached only by boat — and home to the chimpanzees made famous by Jane Goodall.

About the place

Discover Gombe Stream National Park

In 1960 a young Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe to study its chimpanzees. Her discoveries — that chimps make and use tools — changed how the world understands our closest relatives, and her research there continues today.

Gombe became a national park in 1968. It is the smallest national park in Tanzania, and there are no roads: you arrive by boat from Kigoma.

What you will see

  • Wild chimpanzees
  • Lake Tanganyika
  • Kakombe Waterfall
  • Red colobus and baboons
