Lake Eyasi

A seasonal soda lake below the Rift Valley wall, home to the Hadzabe — among the last hunter-gatherers in Africa — and the Datoga, known for their metalwork.

About the place

Discover Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi lies in a fold of the Great Rift Valley, south-west of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Its water rises and falls with the seasons, and in the dry months it can shrink to a white salt pan.

The Hadzabe have lived around the lake for thousands of years, hunting with bows and gathering roots, berries and honey. Their neighbours, the Datoga, are pastoralists and skilled metalworkers. A visit is a rare chance to learn from both.

What you will see

  • The Hadzabe people
  • Datoga blacksmiths
  • Flamingos on the lake
  • Baobabs and onion farms
