The hut route with an extra night at Horombo to acclimatise — the comfortable way to give yourself a better summit chance.
The six-day Marangu climb follows the classic hut route and adds one important thing: a full extra day at Horombo Hut. You walk up to Zebra Rocks and back, then sleep low, so your body adapts before summit night.
You sleep in huts with bunk beds at every camp, share meals in the dining huts with climbers from around the world, and walk a gentle, well-made path. It is a good choice for first-time climbers and for the rainy months.
Route: Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut – Zebra Rocks – Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Marangu Gate
We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (or pick you up anywhere in Moshi or Arusha) and drive you to Maridadi Hotel. In the evening your lead guide comes to brief you on the route, check your gear and answer every question.
After the park paperwork at Marangu Gate (1,860 m) you walk up through the rainforest, where blue and colobus monkeys often watch from the trees. After a rest at Mandara Hut, a short walk takes you to the rim of Maundi Crater for your first wide view.
An early breakfast, then you leave the trees behind and climb into heath and moorland. Mawenzi and Kibo come into view, with the plains of the Maasai steppe far below.
A day to let your body adjust. You walk up through the moorland to the striped cliffs of Zebra Rocks (4,020 m), then come back down to sleep at Horombo. Climb high, sleep low — it makes summit night easier.
A long, steady day past the Last Water Point and across the Saddle, a high desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. Early dinner and an early night — you start the summit climb around midnight.
You set off around midnight by headtorch, past Hans Meyer Cave (5,220 m), to reach Gillman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim at sunrise. One or two more hours along the rim bring you to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m — the roof of Africa. Back at Kibo Hut a warm meal and a rest wait, then you walk down to Horombo.
Down through the moorland to Mandara Hut for lunch, then through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you collect your summit certificate. We drive you back to Maridadi Hotel for a hot shower and a well-earned celebration.
Breakfast, then a private transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. Not ready to leave? Add a safari or a few days on Zanzibar — we arrange it all.
